Spirithood
As a tsukumogami, Kiyomitsu is the spirit that dwelled within the Kashuu Kiyomitsu uchigatana used by Okita Souji. Brought into existence through Okita's expertise in swordsmanship and given human form by the Saniwa of his Citadel, his life is connected to his sword. If his sword were to break (again), he would cease to exist.

Swordsmanship
Due to his human form, he is able to effortlessly wield himself, the Kashuu Kiyomitsu uchigatana, in battle. His fighting style is similar to Okita Souji's, who was the only person who owned him who was able to bring out his full potential.

Accessory Crafting
Kiyomitsu has an interest in fashion and accessories, which also extends to nail art. He makes small, simple accessories like hair clips and earrings and can do both simple and intricate nail art designs.

• APPEARANCE •
Standing at around 165cm (5'4"), Kiyomitsu has a fairly slender but toned figure. His face is fairly androgynous with a beauty mark decorating his face near the left side of his mouth. oOne might describe his neutral expression as a little haughty. His hair is brown and of medium length with long bangs and a much longer section of hair that is tied into a ponytail that is almost always draped over his shoulder. He dresses in Japanese attire that was standard for the late Edo period, the Bakumatsu period, typically sporting a red kimono with black hakama along with black tabi and zori. Golden diamond-shaped earrings on a short chain accessorized both ears, and his nails are well cared for and painted red. When wearing his hakama outfit, the sleeves of his kimono are virtually always tied back with a tasuki to keep them out of his way.
• PERSONALITY •
In season 1 of Hanamaru, Kiyomitsu puts an immense pressure on himself to maintain a cute appearance in addition to maintaining his swordsmanship skills. By presenting himself as a sword who is both cute and strong, Kiyomitsu feels his new master, the Saniwa of the Hanamaru Citadel, will love him -- or at least won't abandon him. Although he often appears disinterested in what's going on around him, he actually does have a strong interest in his fellow sword warriors. His face may read as haughty, he is actually quite empathetic to those around him, taking his role as the first sword summoned to the Citadel very serious by dispensing advice and helping solve what problems he can.

During season 2, while Yasusada goes on a kiwame journey to improve himself as a swordsman and as a person, Kiyomitsu slips into quiet, brewing despair. He understands that the journey is for Yasusada's benefit, but that knowledge doesn't stop the cold loneliness from creeping in. Moreover, the Saniwa stopped sending Kiyomitsu out on missions after Yasusada left without any communication. This left Kiyomitsu to assume the Saniwa had lost interest in him, and so Kiyomitsu trained diligently every day. Five months had gone by and the Saniwa still hadn't sent him on a mission. When Atsushi Toushirou returned from his own kiwame journey that month, he sparred with Kiyomitsu and Kiyomitsu lost after barely 10 seconds. That was the tipping point for Kiyomitsu, who had already been wondering if he really had a place at the Citadel among the other swords. To him, swords are meant to be used, and a sword whose master didn't want to use him was useless. Although Yamanbagiri finally explained the Saniwa stopped sending Kiyomitsu off on journeys so he could rest, Kiyomitsu wasn't completely sold on that idea. After that, Kiyomitsu waited for Yasusada's return, which doesn't happen until around 15 months after Yasusada's departure. When Yasusada finally returned, Kiyomitsu was finally able to smile from his heart again. His loneliness eased, but his worry about whether he was a good enough sword didn't go away.

In the Hanamaru movies, Yasusada encourages Kiyomitsu to go on his own kiwame journey, which after dragging his feet about it, Kiyomitsu finally agrees to do. He used the time to visit Okita Souji in the past, and participated in Shinsengumi life, including participating in the Ikedaya raid. When Kiyomitsu returned from his journey, he had become a much more confident person. It was clear from his expression alone that the burden of worrying whether he was a good enough sword had left his shoulders. He knew where his place was, and he was much more confident that the Saniwa really did love him and wouldn't abandon him.
• HISTORY •
The Kashuu Kiyomitsu blade was forged in 1684 by its namesake. The forger Kashuu lived in an impoverished area, but his skills in blacksmithing were excellent. Although he had been granted opportunities to move to a nicer area, the forger declined, most likely due to pride. The Kashuu Kiyomitsu blade had been sold off at some point and had most likely gone through several owners, although none of them were successful in using such a difficult-to-use sword due to its straighter blade. It wasn't until Okita Souji acquired the blade that Kashuu Kiyomitsu was finally used to his full potential.

Because Okita Souji felt strong emotions while wielding him, the Kashuu Kiyomitsu blade developed a spirit of its own. It became conscious of the world around it and was able to bear witness to the many different events surrounding Okita Souji. However, this consciousness wouldn't last long as in the summer of 1864. Okita Souji took Kashuu Kiyomitsu with him to raid the Ikedaya Inn. While Okita and the rest of the Shinsengumi were ultimately successful, Kashuu Kiyomitsu's blade broke. Okita was unable to find anyone who could repair the blade, and so ultimately, he abandoned the sword.

It wasn't until hundreds of years passed that Kiyomitsu's spirit was re-awakened in the year of 2205 AD. He was summoned by a Saniwa as the first sword at a certain Citadel. From that point on, he became a sword warrior (Touken Danshi) whose responsibility it was to stop the Historical Revisionist Army (HRA) from altering history. He and the other sword warriors would travel back in time to defeat the HRA at every turn so that history would remain unchanged.
